In this 19th century supernatural winter epic, a drunken applejack merchant must go from zero to hero and become the largest fur trapper in North America by defeating hundreds of beavers. Director Mike Cheslik estimated that the mascot costumes cost around $10,000, and the crew purchased all of the costumes online.

A black-and-white, essentially silent film has never been this much fun, nor has it been created with such an exuberant teenage heart, but Hundred Beavers channels all of its ambitious lo-fi energy into one of the most exhilaratingly gut-wrenching movies I’ve seen in a while. With no money, six beavers, and some spare time with friends, Mike Cheslik creates a Looney-Tunes-level physical comedy romp that exploits endless differences of opinion and simple plot mechanics that only get bigger, better, and sillier.
While the film isn’t necessarily emotional, I found myself moved, if not by the characters, then by the filmmaking
The one-note story of an apple farmer who becomes a master beaver hunter is elevated by revenge, romance, and subtle wit, leading to a climax filled with wins carefully placed throughout its run that solidifies Hundred Beavers’ talent and soul. With no studio backing or theatrical distribution, Hundreds of Beavers has nothing to exploit and nothing to sacrifice, it is inherently itself through and through until the very end.
In doing so, it soars to such great, swirling heights that it is unwaveringly important that so much imagination is still there and shows that there is still much to be done, which is a true testament to the power of visual storytelling
